Letter to the editor: Re-elect Karla Shriver, a proven leader, for Rio Grade County commissioner

To Rio Grande County voters:

During the primary election being held in June, 2018, you have a choice for Rio Grande County Commissioner. Karla Shriver has held this position for two terms. During that time, she has been a strong advocate for all the residents in Rio Grande County, she has worked to improve the county’s facilities, equipment, and open spaces. She has worked well with the other elected officials and the employees. With demands for more in the way of salaries, programs, and services, she has been effective in working out solutions that benefit the county as a whole.

Ms. Shriver has expertise in all the areas of county government. The area that will more than likely be tested again is her knowledge and experience in emergency management. With the lack of moisture due to the current drought, Rio Grande County has already experienced the first of possibly numerous forest fires. The Park Creek Fire burned over 60 acres over Memorial Day Weekend. Karla is the only current commissioner who has the experience, the training and the necessary certificates to handle wildfires. This is not something you learn during a fire. There is a procedure that must be followed to obtain any federal or state resources. During the Westfork Complex Fires in 2013, she was a leader in getting both the state and federal resources for not only Rio Grande County, but worked with Mineral, Hinsdale and Archuleta counties to tackle this major fire.

Ms. Shriver is also very active in various service organizations, the banking community, understands farming and water and is always looking for ways to make our community better for all.

I urge you to support Karla Shriver for commissioner.
