MOSCA – The Sangre de Cristo High School girls basketball team led from almost start to finish on Friday as the Lady Thunderbirds went on the defeat Swink 50-33 at Sangre’s gym.

Hunter Wallace opened the scoring by making a jump shot to give the Lady Lions an early 2-0 lead. That would be the only time Swibk would be on top as Palma Enriquez made a 3-point basket to put Sangre in front at 3-2.

Enriquez made a jumper to extend the lead to 5-2, but Wallace knocked down another jumper. Jaydra Cordova made one of two free throws, and then Idahlia Garcia made a short jumper to increase the margin to 8-4.

Abbey Bauserman’s free throw narrowed the lead to 8-5, but Peyton Metz scored five points in an 8-0 Lady T-Bird run. Bauserman made two more free tosses, but Metz’s jumper gave Sangre an 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Metz began the second-quarter scoring with a jumper, but Wallace hit a 3-pointer to help Swink reduce its deficit to 20-10. Emma Hanagan also scored to cut the lead to 20-12, but Alysha Ojeda, Metz and Jaiden Schellabarger all scored for a 26-12 advantage.

Wallace scored just before time expired in the half to cut the Lady T-Birds’ lead to 26-14.

Garcia scored the first points of the third quarter, and Metz and Enriquez also scored for a 32-14 advantage. Wallace’s three ended the run, but Cordova split at the line, and Metz hit another jumper for a 35-17 lead.

Briana McElroy split at the line, and then hit a trey to cut the lead to 35-21. Garcia also made one of two from the line, but Bauserman scored in the final seconds to help Swink pull within 36-23 at the end of the period.

Enriquez scored three points before Wallace drained another trey. Enriquez scored five points, and Metz added two to push the lead to 46-28.

McElroy made a 3-pointer, but Metz and Enriquez both scored to wrap up the scoring.

Metz led the Lady Thunderbirds with 19 points, and Enriquez was right behind with 18.

Wallace was Swink’s leading scorer with 15 points.

Sangre de Cristo (12-2, 2-0 Southern Peaks League) will return to league play today as it will host Centennial.
