Kids’ Crane Festival to take flight October 14

MONTE VISTA — The Monte Vista National Wildlife refuge is hosting the 13th Annual Kids’ Crane Festival on Saturday, October 14. Parents and children of all ages are welcome.

Festivities begin with lunch at the refuge from 12 to 12:30 p.m. Activities afterwards include a puppet show, scavenger hunt, archery, migration and pollination games, binocular lessons, origami and opportunities to learn about the animals who live on our local wildlife refuges. One highlight of the Kids’ Crane Festival every year is the opportunity to see migrating Sandhill Cranes who stopover at the refuge on their way south in autumn.

The auto loop at the Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge is open for hiking and bicycling. Families are encouraged to bring bicycles, helmets and hiking shoes so they can explore the loop together.

The refuge is approximately seven miles south of Monte Vista on Route 15. The festival will be held rain or shine. No reservations are necessary, but children must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, call Tim Armstrong at 719-852-2452.
