ALAMOSA — Mayoral candidate Dan McCann dropped out of the race, and Alamosa City Councilor Jan Vigil announced his candidacy for re-election during Wednesday night’s Alamosa city council meeting.

McCann, who has repeatedly run for city office in the past, told the council on Wednesday that he is focusing on his passion for professional prize fighting so would no longer have time to run a campaign.

“I just don’t have time for small town politics,” he said.

He added, “That may also mean my moving. Bye, bye.”

Vigil said he is seeking re-election for his at-large post on the council. So far no one else has declared candidacy for the at-large seat up for election this November. Vigil said the lack of other contenders “speaks volumes to what I have been able to do in the last four years.”

Vigil recalled that in his first run for council he was able to upset the former mayor and incumbent with his slogan “new face, new leadership,” and he would continue to provide that kind of fresh look and leadership to the council.

“I am open to anybody in the city to talk to,” he said, adding that he wants to continue “to move this town forward.”

McCann’s withdrawal from the mayoral race leaves current Mayor Josef Lucero contending with Councilman Ty Coleman for the seat. In addition to Vigil’s seat, the council posts up for election this fall are Ward 2, currently held by Kristina Daniel, who is seeking re-election and is challenged by David Broyles, and Ward 4, currently held by Michael Stefano who is seeking re-election.

Candidates have until August 24 to turn in petitions.
