Homelake Foundation to host picnic and open house July 14

HOMELAKE—The Homelake Historic Preservation and Restoration Foundation will host a picnic and viewing of the old administration building renovations from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at the pavilion at the veterans’ center at Homelake, 3749 Sherman Ave., Monte Vista.

The Foundation will provide free hotdogs and drinks to the public.

The event includes a walk-through of the old administration building which is being converted into a history museum, the Homelake Veterans’ History Center Museum.

Homelake, the oldest veterans’ center in Colorado, is the state’s official repository for all unclaimed military medals in Colorado. At present, the tiny museum at the center can only exhibit a fraction of the number of items in its care. When completed, the multi-million dollar museum will be used for a number of purposes.

To date, about $1 million has been expended on structural renovations with which the Foundation, established in 2005, has been involved. Much of the work has been accomplished from History Colorado.
