Health fairs scheduled in Valley

VALLEY — Several health fairs are planned this month throughout the San Luis Valley including:

In ALAMOSA

Alamosa County Public Health Department will offer an expanded 9Health Fair in a new location. This year’s fair will be at the Colorado Army National Guard Readiness Center, 1877 Old Sanford Road in Alamosa, from 7-11 a.m. Friday, April 20.

Screenings will include: height/weight, blood pressure, blood draws, skin screening, vision and hearing screening. Participants are encouraged to review their screenings at the “talk to a medical professional” table. There will also be valuable information about nutrition, stress reduction, safe disposal of medications, home safety and how to volunteer for Citizen’s Corp and Medical Reserve Corp.

Blood draws offered and costs are:

Blood chemistry - $35

Blood cell count - $25

Vitamin D - $50

Vitamin B12 - $20

Hemoglobin A1C - $35

PSA for men - $40

Testosterone for men - $40

Testosterone for women - $45

It is not necessary to fast for any of the blood tests and participants are encouraged to drink plenty of water beforehand. A colon cancer screening take home kit is also available for $25.

Participants may register and pay for blood tests and/or the colon cancer screening kit online at www.9HealthFair.org. Registration is also available at the fair and payment can be cash, check, Visa or MasterCard. There will be a “Kids Korner” where children may play while their parents are visiting the fair. For safety reasons, no one under age 18 can be in areas where blood tests are taking place.

In CENTER

Center Head Start in conjunction with Rio Grande Hospital, will host the annual health fair on Friday, April 13 from 6:30-10 a.m. at the Center Head Start building. Rio Grande Hospital labs will, once again, be offering blood screenings. To get bloodwork done, you need to be fasting (no food or drink after 12 midnight on Thursday, April 12) but make sure to drink plenty of water. Tests covered include:

Chemistry Panel (Including TSH), $30 (This includes cholesterol level and many other tests.)

PSA (This checks the prostate), $25

Hgb AlC (This checks blood glucose levels for diabetics), $25

CBC, $15

Vitamin D, $40

Bone Density Scan, $25

Dexa Scan, free

Body Composition, free

Other tests available free of charge include blood pressure, pulmonary lung function, blood glucose finger stick and pulse oximetry.

Snacks will be available for people participating in the health fair.

In LA JARA

San Luis Valley Health will host a health fair on April 28 from 7-11 a.m. at the Centauri Middle School, 17891 US-285, La Jara. The fair will feature free on-site screenings for participants 18 and older including: Blood Pressure, Height Weight BMI, as well as several new screenings.

$25 HgA1c (Hemoglobin A1C)
