First Street closure update

ALAMOSA — First Street in Alamosa will be closed to all traffic between Faculty Drive and Sierra Avenue through the end of the project.

The most difficult phase of this project, the storm drainage main lines installation is nearing completion. The dewatering pump that has been running 24/7 at various locations is expected to cease operating July 25th.

The City of Alamosa’s contractor, Gardner Excavating, has encountered numerous undocumented and unlocated utility crossings in the First Street right of way. Gardner Excavating, city staff, Adams State University staff, Reynolds Engineering and various utility staff have worked cooperatively to modify designs, adjust existing utility installations, and make adjustments to project and event schedules in order to install the necessary storm drainage improvements for this project.

The project is currently 10 days behind schedule with completion now expected August 28th.

The next phase of construction includes the removal of unsuitable materials from the roadway section. Truck traffic will increase, hauling the unsuitable materials to the City of Alamosa material storage area located at 20th Street and Old Airport Road. In addition, trucks loaded with gravel will be turning off Main Street (US 160) onto Edgemont Blvd. Please use caution when traveling in these areas.

The City of Alamosa thanks motorists in advance for their help in avoiding travel on First Street during this project.
