MONTE VISTA — On a night where Monte Vista honored local legends, Centauri wrestling got the win by a team score of 54-24.

Before the action got underway, Monte Vista took a minute to honor a few members of the community for their contribution to wrestling by unveiling banners in the gym dedicated to Carole Wiedeman, Rocky Weideman, Craig Kelso and John McClure. Banners to commemorate all four’s induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame now hang in the Monte Vista gym.

The Pirate wrestlers did well on senior night picking up 4 wins of 7 contested weights. The first match of the night took place between Monte Vista’s Damian Lopez and Robert Coombs of Centauri at 120 pounds. Lopez stayed busy through the first period with a takedown and 5 near fall points to take a 7-0 lead into the second period. Coombs would register some points down the stretch but relented the 11-4 decision to Lopez.

At 126 pounds, it was DeAngelo Archuleta of Monte Vista and Centauri’s Cyrus Sandoval. Archuleta registered a takedown and three near-fall points to go ahead 5-1 after one period. Two more takedowns in each of the final two periods would fuel him to a 9-4 victory despite Sandoval mounting a small comeback.

Eyan Chavez of Centauri broke up the green and gold procession with a win at 132 pounds. Chavez logged four takedowns in the first period against opponent Nathaniel Juarez before earning the win by fall at 1:49.

Monte Vista’s Hunter Pacheco got the Pirates back on track with a victory at 138 pounds. Pacheco’s opponent Ivan Lopez started with the advantage, logging two takedowns in the first period to lead 4-3 into the second. There, Pacheco took control. Pacheco logged a takedown and 5 near fall points before earning a fall for the win at 3:41.

Following two forfeits to Centauri’s Jordan Martin and Erik Mestas, Zach Buhr added 6 more team points for Centauri with a pin of Pablo Rivera. Byron Shawcroft, Adam Chacon, Josh Burrola would also accept forfeits from Monte Vista leading to the last two matches of the night.

At 220 pounds, Ethan Hotz of Monte Vista would add another victory for the Pirates in his match against Joseph Morreno. Hotz logged the lone points in the first period with a takedown. In the second period, he would start with another takedown and translate that into a pin at 2:47. In the final match of the night Monte Vista’s Jason Duran faced Centauri’s Remi Lucero in the heavyweight class. The two clashed early but it was Lucero who scored the takedown and quickly worked his way to a pin at 1:50 to give the Falcons a 54-24 win.

Both squads will get in as much activity as they can before regional play in Sierra Grande on Feb. 14-15.
