DelMar showers Tu Casa with kids toys and more

ALAMOSA — More than 300 toys and other children’s gifts and $600 cash was donated to Tu Casa’s Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) Thursday in a drive conducted by DelMar Carpet One.

DelMar spokesperson Nickie Trunnell said customers and local businesses contributed toys, activity sets, diapers, baby wipes, color books and various other school-type supplies over the past couple of months. In addition, $400 was raised through DelMar’s donation of 10 cents per square foot of carpet pad purchased in the month of August.

The remainder of the $200 was raised through cash donations in the store and collected during DelMar’s sponsorship of the chile eating contest held recently in Cole Park.

A similar drive was held a few years ago, Trunnell said, but this year the store asked the CAC specifically what they needed.

Some major donors towards the project this year included the Kiwanis Club of South Fork (toys), Safeway and City Market (toys and school supplies) and Walgreens (60,000 bonus rewards points).

Tu Casa’s San Luis Valley CAC is a child-focused, facility-based program in which representatives from many disciplines including law enforcement, child protection, prosecution, mental health, medical, and victim advocacy work together. The primary goal is to ensure that children served are not further victimized by the intervention systems designed to protect them.
