ALAMOSA — David Arthur Spangler, 68, of Fernandina Beach, Florida passed away July 14, 2020, due to COVID-19. 

David was a true hero and patriot, serving his country with pride and honor for 32 years as a submariner and nuclear specialist in the United States Navy.  He rose to the rank of Commander before his well-deserved and well-timed retirement.

David was born in Littleton, Colorado and grew up in Alamosa, Colorado.  He was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church.  He received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Brenau University.

Commander Spangler married Rebecca Spangler on Oct. 11, 1997.  During their time in the US Navy, they resided in St. Marys, Washington D.C. and Honolulu.  They spent every minute together watching sports, traveling and cooking.  He adored spending time on the beach and hunting shark teeth with Becky.

David is survived by his wife, Rebecca Spangler, and his four children – Danielle Walton of Kingsland, Georgia, Joshua Spangler (Analee) of San Diego, California, Megan Freeman (Allen) and Kelcy LópezFreeman (Ivette) of Atlanta, Georgia.  David is also survived by his four grandchildren – Michael Walton of Kingsland, Georgia, Makayla Spangler, Evan Spangler and Lucas Spangler of San Diego, California.

He was predeceased by his grandson, Logan Spangler of San Diego, California.  David is also survived by siblings Chris Spangler of Denver, Colorado, Diane Miller of Citrus County, Florida, and John Spangler of Pueblo, Colorado.

To honor his life and career, Commander Spangler will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Military Officers Association of America scholarship fund at moaa.org/donate.
