Crestone Shumei gallery features Starseed

CRESTONE — Blue Starseed is Shumei’s featured artist for the month of April. An Art Symposium will be held on April 15th at 3 p.m.

Born 1979 into a family of artists, Blue Starseed (Meredith Rose) grew up in Philadelphia and a remote island in Maine. She received her BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design and completed their European Honors Program in Rome. She also studied at Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland. Sensuality, truth, and outer space influence Blue Starseed’s figurative paintings. Shumei will host Blue Starseed for the entire month of April. A symposium with the artist will be held on Sunday April 15th from 3-5 p.m. A reception will follow the presentation.

The expressive figures that Blue Starseed creates are painted from live models and incorporated into the natural world. Her recent work portrays humans in the cosmos or floating in clouds. She paints on hemp linen for environmental reasons.  She also creates charcoal figure drawings that are high contrast and sharp in execution. In an ongoing series of art videos, she performs paintings in extreme environments internationally to redefine what a “solo exhibition” truly is.  Besides outdoors, she has exhibited in galleries in New Mexico, Colorado, and the Centro Cultural, Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico.  Blue Starseed currently lives in Crestone.

Meet with the artist and learn more about her work on Sunday April 15th starting at 3 p.m. This event is free to the public. Please visit www.shumeicrestone.org or call 256-5284 for more information. The Shumei gallery is open every day 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
