MONTE VISTA— On Thursday the 26th The Creede Miners traveled east for a cross class clash with the Monte Vista Pirates, taking the match 3 sets to none.

It’s been a rocky road for the Miners since 2013 since they were forced to forfeit a good portion of the season en route to abandoning the volleyball program for the 2014 season.

Since then they have battled their way back, in 2015 they turned out a 3-8 record. Last year the Miners had a decent season and missed the playoffs with a .500 record and a 5th place finish in District 6 of 1A Volleyball. And this year coming into their game against Monte Vista they were riding a 6 game winning streak.

The Pirates are doing some climbing of their own.  They are one year removed from a winless season. This year they added three victories and seem to be making steps in the correct direction but were still on a 4 game skid heading into their match-up with the Miners.

Creede earned the victory with three sets where they looked firmly in control. They set the tone early with a 25-14 score in the first set. From there on the final two sets were taken by 9 points or more with a 25-16 second and 25-10 third set.

The loss marked the final game of the year for Monte Vista and they closed their season 3-18 and most likely are looking forward to next year. Creede would attend a quad the following week hosted by Sangre de Cristo to close out their season.

Against the Thunderbirds they took the game to 5 sets but fell 3-2. In the afternoon game the Miners dropped a 3 set affair to La Veta before ending their day out east with a 3-1 victory over the Cotopaxi Pirates having gone 1-2 in the quad.

With those four games the Miners closed their season with a 16-7 record good enough for the 20th seed going into the playoffs. In their foray into Regionals the Miners will likely travel east for a TRI hosted by La Veta. There Creede will get an opportunity to avenge their loss to La Veta from the week prior and get their first look at the De Beque Dragons. Date time and location for the Regional matchup have yet to be released on CHSAA.
