County seeks to fill spots

ALAMOSA — The Alamosa County Board of Commissioners is announcing they will be filling the vacancy of Melanie Woodward, clerk and recorder. Woodward, who is a Republican, is resigning from her elected position effective Dec. 1. A new person will be appointed and take office Dec. 2, 2019.

The clerk and recorder is responsible for managing a $630,000 budget; issuing and recording marriage licenses; recording all real estate transactions; maintaining birth, death and other vital records; issuing liquor licenses; registering voters; and conducting all primary, general and county elections as well as contracted municipal and school district elections. The position pays $80,737 plus benefits and has a staff of seven full-time employees.

Woodward, who has held the elected position for 12 years said, “This is a great opportunity for someone who has the desire to be a public servant and uphold the State Constitution. Our elections are probably the most difficult. People get emotional, but if you follow the law and have good processes in place, then everyone knows it is fair and transparent.” 

Interested applicants must be an Alamosa County resident for at least 12 months, a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years of age. The board will conduct interviews on Oct. 22 and name the new Clerk and Recorder at their regularly scheduled Board meeting on Oct. 23. 

The person will have to run for the position in Nov. 2020 and again in Nov. 2022.
