CONEJOS COUNTY – A Saturday night collision between two automobiles on Highway 285 in Conejos County resulted in the death of one person and injuries to four others, ranging from serious to minor.

According to a report by the Colorado State Patrol, at approximately 8:02 p.m. on Saturday night, a 2008 blue Honda Fit was traveling northbound on Highway 285 when a southbound 1989 blue Volkswagen Cabriolet attempted to make a left turn onto Conejos County Road X. The Honda struck the Volkswagen on its front passenger side in the middle of the northbound lane as the Volkswagen attempted to make the turn.

After impact, the Honda spun clockwise and came to a stop in the northbound lane. The Volkswagen spun counterclockwise, hit the northbound shoulder guard rail, then spun clockwise, coming to rest in the northbound lane.

The Volkswagen’s front passenger suffered fatal injuries and succumbed to those injuries on the scene. The driver of the Volkswagen and right rear passenger suffered serious injuries. A third passenger suffered moderate injuries.

The driver of the Honda, who was traveling alone, suffered only minor injuries.

The identity of the person who was killed has not been released at this time. The crash is still under investigation by the Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit.
