City Council creates Destination Development position

ALAMOSA — Wednesday, Alamosa City Council passed ordinance No. 11-2021 to establish a Destination Development position.

The second reading for the proposed ordinance passed with no public opinion and unanimous support from council

The ordinance enters the City of Alamosa into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Alamosa Convention & Visitors Bureau to create a Destination Development position. As the name suggests the new position in Destination Development will be working rather heavily in tourism attempting to make the community into a more appetizing destination with the intent to “increase traveler spending and length of stays.”

As described in the background, “The partnership would allow for the reclassification of one position and focus it on supporting and creating programs that would appeal to visitors and community members.  The goal of the position is to get more out of current events and fill any gaps with new events.  By better positioning the community for visitors, local businesses will be directly impacted.”

The current funding structure demands $10,000 a year and will be funded by Alamosa through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

The position will exist at least until December 2026, provided Alamosa allocates the necessary funding. During that time the position will on the clock to demonstrate results.
