Centauri wins Florence wrestling tournament

ALAMOSA – The top-ranked Centauri High School wrestling team won the Mel Smith Invitational which took place last Friday and Saturday in Florence.

Six Falcons were individual placers including two champions. Winning their weight divisions were Eyan Chavez (152) and Zach Buhr (182).

Placing second were Mario Vigil (120) and Josh Polkowske (160), while Erik Mestas took fourth at 170 pounds and Byron Shawcroft was sixth at 195.

Centauri scored 171 ½ points, easily outdistancing second place Alamosa with 140 ½. Eaton was third with 135 ½, and Mullen, ranked first in Class 3A, was fourth with 130 /2.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Buena Vista with 129, Platte Valley with 123, Valley with 103, Canon City with 96 ½, Brush with 91 and host Florence with 84.

Centauri will host its home tournament on Saturday, while Alamosa will go to the Top of the Rockies Tournament at Centaurus High School in Lafayette this Friday and Saturday.
