Cannabis consumption club denied

ALAMOSA — During Wednesday night’s Alamosa city council meeting, which drew a standing-room-only crowd, the council unanimously voted to deny the city’s first request for a cannabis consumption club.

The club would have been located across from Trinidad State Junior College in the same building as Main Copy Source off Main Street.

A large contingent showed up in support of the club, many of whom spoke in favor of granting the requested permitted use by special review. The city’s planning commission recommended denial, and the city council agreed with the recommendation.

Reasons for the denial included lack of required parking spaces and restrooms and potential ventilation compliance, should the club go from the proposed vaping only to smoking.

Since the city council enacted a temporary moratorium on cannabis consumption clubs after this application was submitted, applicants will now have to wait to resubmit an application for another location or this location with compliance issues corrected until the council determines if it will allow such clubs in the future and if so, how it will regulate them.
