Author to give Sunday museum program on WW I nurse diaries

SAGUACHE — Join Alice S. Stephenson, BSN, RN, PN (retired) for the free Sunday program at 1:30 p.m. on August 6 at the Saguache County Museum. A native of Steamboat Springs, Stephenson wrote Three Scuffed Suitcases, a biography from the diaries of Mary Elizabeth (Bess) Shellabarger, a World War I nurse from the San Luis Valley.

When Bess Shellabarger died in her 80’s, she left her grandniece, Alice, three old, beat-up suitcases full of 60 years worth of diaries…and instructions to write her memoirs.

Learn about Bess, a dedicated nurse, an amazing woman, her career choices and world travels through Alice Stephenson’s power point presentation. Bess spent her career paving the way for other women to attain an education and contribute to the workforce.

She returned often to her home, the ranch at Rio Alto.

Refreshments will be served. Donations are always appreciated.
