ASU Board of Trustees meets December 14

ALAMOSA – The Adams State University Board of Trustees will meet at 9 a.m. on Friday and then participate Saturday in the University’s Fall 2018 Commencement ceremonies.

The board’s meeting agenda includes an action item on debt restructuring, the proposed creation of the Adams100 Commission to plan and organize events related to the founding of the institution in 1921, and an informational item on a smoke- and vape-free campus.

See full agenda at www.adams.edu/trustees. Public comment will be taken at the beginning of the meeting.

The smoke-free and vape-free campus informational item relates to an executive order signed by Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper on Nov. 2 that directs state agencies to take action to limit the use and sale of tobacco products, vaping products and e-cigarettes.

The executive order takes several concrete steps that are within existing agency authority, including extending the current prohibition on smoking in state buildings to e-cigarettes and vaping. It also extends prohibitions on smoking and vaping to the grounds of state buildings, including on the grounds of Adams State.

In compliance with the executive order, Adams State will immediately begin compliance efforts, moving the University to a smoke- and vape-free campus. A working group is being established to amend the existing policy.

Current legislation and policy limit the use of tobacco products in campus buildings and facilities or within a radius of 15 feet of all entryways of campus buildings and facilities. Adams State intends to amend its policy so that smoking and vaping will not be allowed anywhere campus, including its outdoor areas.
