ASU baseball set to host Colorado Christian

ALAMOSA—The Adams State University baseball team will host Colorado Christian University in a four-game series March 31st through April 2nd. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday (12:00 p.m. & 3:00 p.m.) and conclude on Monday with another doubleheader (12:00 pm & 3:00 p.m.). All of the games will be played at the ASU baseball field.

Adams State University preserved a 1-0 lead entering the fourth inning but Metropolitan State University of Denver scored 11 unanswered runs en route to an 11-1 win over the Grizzlies during Sunday's series finale at the Regency Athletic Complex in Denver. Starting pitcher Casey Weber (2-3) cruised through three innings with four strikeouts and one hit allowed before the Roadrunners pushed their first run across home plate in the fourth. Metro State followed with a six-run fifth inning and four runs in the seventh to pull away from Adams State. A Thomaslee Mares RBI fielder's choice in the first gave ASU a 1-0 lead. The play scored Dustin Kachel who reached base with a leadoff single. After Kachel's leadoff knock, the Grizzlies went hitless until an Evan Weidner single in the third. Weidner added another single in the sixth to account for two of ASU's four hits on Sunday. Erik Hildebrandt singled in the eighth for ASU's final hit in the series finale. On the mound, Weber threw 4.2 innings with seven runs allowed off eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Weidner finished 2-for-3 as Kachel went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Beau Lofink tossed 2.0 innings with four runs off seven hits as Adam Molina finished the game with 1.1 innings of work and allowed only one hit along with a strikeout.

The Grizzlies won the series opener against Metro State on Friday before dropping the final three games in the four-game series.

Colorado Christian enters this weekend's action with an overall record of 8-18 while holding a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record of 2-9. The Cougars record on the road this season is 6-12. They are coming into this weekend's action having split their four game series against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. Colorado Christian won the opening and closing game while dropping the middle two outings. The 2017 squad boasts plenty of experience with 15 juniors and six seniors on the roster. CCU's offense is led by Brandon Hesselberg who has a .394 batting average. He is closely followed by Jerry Gallegos with a .369 average but leads the Cougars with three home runs on the season. Sophomore Evan Fink leads the pitching staff with a record of 4-3 and a 5.94 ERA.

Adams State enters play this weekend with a season record of 9-17, 3-9 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Grizzlies enter the series having dropped three out of four games again Metro State in Denver. ASU's offense is led by Evan Weidner who has a .385 batting average including eight doubles on the season. Bailey Garcia leads the Grizzly pitchers with a 3.15 ERA over his 25.2 innings this season.

This will be the only regular season meeting between these two teams. Over the past three seasons Adams State has a record of 9-3 against Colorado Christian. The Grizzlies have won three out of four games each year. The last time these two teams played in Alamosa was in March 2015. The 2016 meeting was played in Pueblo while the 2014 series was in Lakewood.
