ALAMOSA — New Alamosa Police Chief Kenneth Anderson officially took his oath of office Wednesday night.

Chief Anderson has served as interim chief and was subsequently appointed permanent police chief following the relocation of Chief Duane Oakes.

The new chief thanked Alamosa City Manager Heather Brooks for appointing him chief and for the city council for supporting her decision and giving him the opportunity to serve in his new position.

“I have devoted my law enforcement career to the Alamosa Police Department, and I can’t wait to start this new chapter,” Anderson said.

“I look forward to this opportunity you have given me.”

Anderson has served in the department for 18 years, working his way up to captain. He has served as supervisor, S.W.A.T. commander and police academy instructor. Police academy students were in the audience for the ceremony Wednesday night as were numerous members of the Alamosa Police Department, other law enforcement agencies, family members and friends. Chief Anderson thanked them all for their support and specifically acknowledged his parents, wife and children.

Alamosa city councilors congratulated Chief Anderson on his new appointment and thanked Brooks for choosing him for the position.

“It is a big undertaking, and I know you will do a wonderful job,” said Councilor Kristina Daniel. “Thank you for this leadership in our community in this way.”

“It’s awesome that you are homegrown,” said Councilman Jan Vigil.

Councilman Charles Griego said he remembered when Anderson first joined the force and has watched him grow in capability and leadership over the years. “I even told him ‘one day you are going to be the next chief of Alamosa’.”

Griego added that he was glad Anderson was chosen for the position. “I think you will do a great job.”

“I know you will do great. The city council has your back,” added Alamosa Councilman Michael Carson.

“I know you are going to do a great job,” added Councilor Liz Hensley who said she felt safe and secure knowing he was in charge.

“Chief Anderson, it’s nice to say that word,” said Councilman David Broyles. “You have our support.”

Mayor Ty Coleman added his congratulations and belief that Anderson was the right choice for the job. The mayor also spoke about Chief Anderson’s qualities of being honest and sincere as well as fair and just.
