Alamosa to cut ribbon on new rink/pavilion

ALAMOSA — The City of Alamosa and project partners invite the public to a ribbon cutting and grand opening of the Multi-Purpose Pavilion/Ice Rink at 2242 Old Sanford Road, Alamosa (next to the Alamosa Family Rec Center) on Wednesday, January 31 at 1 p.m.

Ice skating will open to the public immediately following the ceremony.

Speakers for the opening ceremonies at 1 p.m. will include Mayor Ty Coleman, Parks, Recreation, and Library Director Andy Rice, Community Recreation Advisory Board Chairman Paul Duarte and Alcon Construction Representative Brian Cook.

In addition, Randy Kanai with the Colorado Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) will be presenting the San Luis Valley Youth Hockey Association a check for $25,000, which is earmarked for the facility.

The mayor will lead out in the ribbon cutting, which will be followed by public skating until 5 p.m. when youth hockey practices begin and light refreshments will be provided by Alcon Construction and Alamosa Parks and Recreation.

At 4 p.m. the Colorado Avalanche will lead a children’s celebration with Bernie, their mascot, and some merchandise giveaways for the public.

Construction of the rink/pavilion has remained right on schedule since breaking ground the end of June 2017. Funding for the $2.8 million project has been provided by the city, GOCO (Great Outdoors Colorado), DOLA (Department of Local Affairs), Gates and Daniels Foundations, Colorado Amateur Hockey Association and 20 individual and group contributors.

Alcon Construction erected the building.

The new rink/pavilion will not only provide a place, complete with chiller, where residents can skate all winter but also a place where community members and guests can enjoy other activities the rest of the year.

“There would not have been any skating season at Carroll Park this year with such a warm January,” Rice said.

Rink hours will be Monday through Thursday from 12-5 p.m.; Friday from 12-10 p.m.; Saturday from 2-10 p.m.; and Sunday from 12-8 p.m.

Session passes are $3 for skaters ages 16 years and older, $4 for pass/skate rental; $2 for students with valid school ID and youth ages 6-15, $3 for pass/skate rental; free session pass for ages 5 and under, $3 for skate rental. Also available are 10-punch passes for $25, adults, and $17 for students/youth, or for 10-punch passes with skate rental, $30 for adults and $25 for students/youth.
