Alamosa salutes its veterans

It was a spectacular day for the Annual Veteran’s Day Parade in Alamosa. The festivities included bands, a fly-over, and numerous veterans participating in the march down Main Street.

ALAMOSA — It was a perfect day for celebrating the 100th edition of Veterans Day in Alamosa, as there was no shortage of color and patriotism during the parade festivities.

Former Evans Elementary School Principal Wally Herrera, who served in the United States Army from 1970-73 during the Vietnam War, said he thinks the parade is “fantastic.”

He added: “It’s very patriotic.

“It’s a good community, to be honest with you, the way they support everything; it’s great.”

Herrera said he has lived in Alamosa for 50 years, and he lived here before joining the army and attended Adams State after serving his country.

Irene Taylor, who has lived in Alamosa since 1988 attended the parade with Adriana Griego, 8, and Anthony Griego, 12, said the community does a very good job honoring its veterans and she attends the parade just about every year.

“The bands were awesome; we got to see some of the older veterans in the parade, too, Taylor said.

Adriana Griego said the parade was good because she saw her brother, Alex Griego, who was in the parade as a member of the Alamosa High School band.

The event was once again hosted by VFW Post 113. A spectacular fly-over, a 21 gun salute, the blowing of taps, and the National Anthem began the celebration.

Many veterans, including Sgt. Lewis Entz driving his WWII era jeep, participated in the parade.

Many American flags and the flags of the branches of service flew proudly. Bands from Monte Vista and Alamosa middle and high schools, and Adams State University played a variety of patriotic melodies.

There were also numerous dignitaries from the City and County of Alamosa present, including Commissioners Darius Allen and Michael Yohn and Mayor Ty Coleman. The cheering from the crowds that lined Main Street seemingly confirmed that Alamosa and the San Luis Valley have a great deal to be proud of on a beautiful November Day.
