Alamosa Round-up saves the best for last day

ALAMOSA – The 2022 Alamosa Round-up came to an end on Saturday with four champions being decided on the final day.

One final day champion came in bull riding as Canyon Bass of Johnson City, Texas, scored 84 points on Ain’t No Cajun. He edged Walsenburg’s Garrett Norby who had scored the previous high of 82 points on Friday.

The bulls once again had the advantage on Saturday as only two of 11 riders were successful. In addition to Bass, Jesse Hopper of Mangum, Okla., scored 73 points on Taking Chances.

Also winning on the final day was the team roping tandem of Tyler Wade of Terrell, Texas, and Trey Yates of Pueblo. They recorded a time of 5.3 seconds to win the title.

Two other teams were also successful as Tanner Bryson of Camp Verde, Ariz., and Robert Murphy of Congress, Ariz., had a time of 7.5 seconds, and Jase Staudt of Nathrop and Jorge Cruz of Stratton had a time of 11.4.

All of the tie-down ropers were successful on Saturday with Sterling Smith of Stephenville, Texas, scoring a time of 8.4 seconds to win the overall championship.

The other Saturday champion came in the Saturday morning barrel racing slack as Cindy Smith of Lovington, N.M., had a time of 17.29 seconds.

In the Saturday evening barrel race, Kelly Yates of Pueblo had a time of 17.86.

In the other rough stock events, the cowboys remained perfect in bareback riding as all three riders on Saturday had successful rides. Rio lee of Tucson, Ariz., scored 78 points on Got Ur 6, Evan Betony of Tonalea, Ariz., scored 76 on Sassy Pants, and Drake Amundson of Laramie, Wyo., scored 73 ½ on Falina.

Shawn Perkins of Roberts, Mont., was the overall champion with a 79 ½-point ride on Friday.

In saddle bronc riding, only one out of five competitors had a successful ride as Zac Dallas of Albuquerque, N.M., scored 74 points on War Horse to finish second overall. Slade Keith of Stanfield, Ariz., was the overall champion with a 76-point ride on Friday.

Steer wrestling saw seven out of 10 bulldoggers put their steers on the ground. Cody Pratt of Pueblo had the best run of 5.3 seconds, followed by Hadley Jackson of La Junta in 5.9. However, another La Junta performer, Colt Honey, maintained his lead of 5.1 seconds.

In ladies breakaway roping, Linsay Rosser-Sumpter of Fowler had the best time n Saturday in 4.4 seconds. However, another Fowler cowgirl, Tamara Tunink, was the overall winner with a time of 2.5 seconds in the Friday morning slack.

Mutton Bustin’

Saturday also saw the Top 4 mutton busters in both the six- and seven-year-old divisions return.

In the six-year-old division, Kasen Maez was the winner with 98 ½ points, followed by Miguel Pacheco with 80, Jalissa Burrola with 77, and Rilee Fresquez with 76.

In the seven-year-old division, Jon E. Kissel and Emerie Schmittel tied for first with 99 points each, but Kissel was the winner in a ride-off. Elijah Garcia was third with 98 ¼, and Harley Day was fourth with 87.

Valley barrel race

The final five local barrel racers also returned on Saturday with RaeLynn Bouet winning the overall competition with an 18.51-second ride on Juneau. Jill Francia was wecond in 1.921 on Amigo, followed by Gracie Wilson in 19.22 on Whimpy, Kody Gray in 19.35 on Tekee, and Rose Mary Egolf in 21.31 on Maxine.
