AHS Soccer can’t overcome slow start against Lamar

ALAMOSA — Alamosa Mean Moose boys’ soccer got their 2019 season started with the home opener in AHS Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Lamar got going immediately and put Alamosa away in a 4-1 decision.

Alamosa and Lamar last saw each other in the 2018 season, the Moose took that meeting 3-2. This past Friday belonged to Lamar however. The visitors scored early and often, two minutes in Cristian Gameros put Lamar ahead 1-0. Then with 20 minutes remaining in the first half, a header on a corner kick pushed the lead to 2-0. Two minutes later and Gameros made it two goals stacking the lead to three goals.

In a hole to start the second half, Alamosa dialed up some pressure and began turning things around unofficially outshooting Lamar down the stretch. Unfortunately one of Lamar’s shots would be Gameros’ third goal of the game, the Gameros hat trick gave the visiting Lamar team a commanding 4-0 lead.

Alamosa would strike back on a slicing attack that caught the defense off guard and wound up in the back of the net to bring the game to its conclusive 4-1 score with five minutes remaining in the latter half. Despite keeping up the offensive pressure and making the necessary corrections to slow Lamar’s offense in the second half, Alamosa would fall in their home opener.

The Moose will get more chances to defend home field when they host a two-game homestand, Friday, Aug. 30th will be Telluride at 3 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 31st Alamosa welcomes Ridgeway for an 11 a.m. game.
