ALAMOSA – The Adams State University Collegiate Farm Bureau chapter traveled to the annual state meeting in Denver from November 17 through November 20 and competed in the CFB Collegiate Discussion Meet.

“This is part of the expectation as a chapter for which they are funded through the Colorado Farm Bureau,” said Zena Buser, professor of business.

Kreg Vollmer, agribusiness club vice president, qualified for the Collegiate Division Final Four, where he excelled at his discussion and placed first. “ASU students have earned first place the last two years and we continued the momentum,” Buser added. Vollmer will compete in the National Discussion Meet at the National Young Farmer & Rancher Conference in Reno, Nev., in February.

The students saw policy development in action and attended informative workshops about current issues in the agricultural business industry. Along with Vollmer, Brandi Myers, Cody Trujillo, Pauline Luhman, and Sharon Valadez competed in the Collegiate Discussion Meet against students from Colorado State University and Northeastern Junior College. Neely, senior and club president, competed in the Young Farmer & Rancher (YF&R) division of the discussion meet, where she qualified for the Final Four and placed fourth.

The Agribusiness Club appreciates all who have supported the club endeavors and special club sponsors including Colorado Potato Administrative Committee and the Farm Bureaus of Conejos, Alamosa, Rio Grande and Saguache Counties.

The Agribusiness Club and Collegiate Farm Bureau Chapter kept busy throughout the semester including helping the Colorado Potato Administrative Committee (CPAC) at their annual Monte Vista Potato Festival in September. The club also held a Farmer Olympic Games as a fundraiser in conjunction with Adams State’s Spud Bowl on November 4. Events included squash bowling, haystacking, cowboy croquet, potato sack races, and firewood stacking relays. The club hopes to increase turnout next year, and for nicer, less windy weather. ASU Agribusiness Club appreciated the Farmer Olympic sponsors including Alta Fuels, CPAC, Monte Vista Coop, and Husmann Plumbing. The club also participated in various homecoming activities including the parade.

“I am extremely proud of our students and their hard work, as well as their continued engagement with our local communities,” Buser said.
