Moose got back to back with regional titles

NEWCASTLE, Colo. — For the second year in a row both the Alamosa boys and girls have punched their ticket to the 3A Cross-Country State Finals with first-place finishes as a team in the regional qualifiers. The girls were led by sophomore Sarah DeLaCerda who finished first overall in 3A Region 1 on Friday with a time of 19:18.20. The next four Alamosa runners - Autumn McQuitty, Elizabeth McQuitty, Madeline Castillo and Lia Castillo all finished in the top ten. The Mean Moose Girl’s team score of 31 was good enough for their second regional title in as many years.

Alamosa Boys were led by junior Santiago Trujillo who crossed the line in first place with a time of 17:09.50. Teammates Izaiah Casanova, Jayr Almeida, Mario Villalba finished close behind in top-ten placings. The Mean Moose placings amounted to 44 team points and a first place to take a second straight regional title.

Centauri Girls had a strong showing at their regional qualifier taking second as a team with a score of 22 points. Senior Jocelyn Jarvies paced the Falcons finishing in a time of 21:11.1. She was followed by teammates Tayte Hostetter and Kaia Skadberg who also finished in the top ten. Also competing was Sargent’s Emma Sewell who earned 16th with a final time of 23:11.00.

Centauri’s Boys took a fifth overall placing scoring 115 points at their 2A Regional qualifier led by Mason Sowards who finished 20th overall.

There were plenty of notable performances outside team scoring including Del Norte’s Riley Orr who led all 2A Boys with a 12 overall finish with a time of 17:46.80. Fellow standout Weston Burkhart of Sargent placed 16th with a final time of 17:59.50. 

Those who qualify for state will have a week to prepare. State finals are slated to begin Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Norris-Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs. The same venue at which both Alamosa boys and girls teams came away with first-place finishes at the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede mere months ago.
