When Flight MH17 went down over Ukraine it was viewed as a sad tragedy. The nearly 300 passengers feared dead, there was not much to be done simply because the airliner went down in a warzone.
Initial news reports and reaction in the US took the tone of sadness. News outlets mentioned it might have been shot down, but no one in the US seemed especially angry.
Fast-forward a couple days: The US learned that one passenger was a US citizen. Suddenly the downed jet was no longer sad – it was a cause to be angry.
Why now? Well, because a US citizen was killed.
