In an online discussion group that I belong to, the question was asked, “Who is your favorite poet, and why do you like their work?” To be honest, this kind of question always bothers me. Having a favorite seems to diminish everything else to a lower category, and I’ve recently realized that my answer depends on my mood at the time.
Still, this discussion group is comprised of writers, poets, editors and publishers, and I always learn something from them. So I decided to participate, thought about my answer, and wrote, “I guess I am my favorite poet. If I don’t love my own work, how can I expect anyone else to?”
