MONTE VISTA – Longtime Monte Vista resident Gilbert Estevan Padilla, 89, passed away surrounded by his loving family on June 11, 2014.
Gilbert was born on August 8, 1924 in Salida, Colorado to Robert and Anastacia Padilla. He grew up and attended school in Monte Vista. In 1944 he married Mary Lovato in Taos, New Mexico. Gilbert worked for 24 years as the bookkeeper for Valley Lumber. Following his time there he started his own carpenter and electrician business. He was a member of Penitente and a past board member for the Monte Vista Headstart. Gilbert enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, playing his trumpet and above all spending time with his family and especially his dearly loved grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He will be remembered as a very charitable and loving person and will be forever sadly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary Padilla of Monte Vista, his children; Elizabeth (Dave) Padilla of Colorado Springs, Fran (Tom) Herrera of Monte Vista, Gilbert (Elva) Padilla of Delta, Colorado, Yvonne (Manuel) Martinez of Monte Vista and Joe (Randi) Martinez of Monte Vista, 12 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, his children, Sig Padilla, Roberta Padilla, Robert Anthony Padilla and twins Ida and Marie Padilla, his great grandson Mario Najera and his brother Bernie Padilla.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday June 16th, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monte Vista. A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday June 15th at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Monte Vista followed by a Recitation of the Rosary at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 7:00 p.m. Burial will follow services in the San Luis Valley Cemetery.
