Ralph Outcalt, left, visits with Alamosa County Commissioner Darius Allen during the kick-off to the county’s centennial celebration in 2013.

ALAMOSA — Ralph Outcalt — the man who shared his birth year with the origin of Alamosa County — died Sunday at his Alamosa home.

Outcalt helped Alamosa County celebrate its centennial year, along with his own 100th birthday, during 2013. He helped the county kick off its celebration in the spring and served as grand marshal for Alamosa’s Fourth of July parade.

Outcalt was one of three siblings whose father died during the Spanish flu epidemic in 1918, and his mother supported the family by operating a boarding house. Outcalt attended Alamosa High School but completed his schooling via correspondence, as he was helping support the family by working at a local bakery.
