ALAMOSA — Shortly after 9 a.m. Monday morning, staff members in Porter Hall on the ASU campus reported a strong chemical smell concentrated in a stairwell in the northeast corner of the building.
Adams State Police responded and notified the Alamosa Fire Department.
ASUPD staff notified building occupants in the affected area and recommended that they leave the immediate area.
Firefighters vented the area until the odor was dissipated. University staff posted warning signs in the area advising that an unknown chemical contaminant may still be present. Three floors of faculty offices and some student work areas on the NE corner are behind warning signs. A professional decontamination crew will be contracted to insure that the area is no longer a risk to building users. ASU officials are not sure at this time how long that process will take.
Faculty members who need access to their offices are advised to do so at their own risk, as the contaminant has not been identified and thepossible effects of the contaminant are unknown.
