Every once in a while a person is just lucky, fortunate, blessed...whatever you want to call it. That’s how I feel about the day I stopped and visited with Safeway manager, Mark Martinez. For months and months I had been thinking about how wonderful it would be, if one of the large corporate stores in our Valley, would join me in collecting loose change for the San Luis Valley Cancer Relief Fund.
The really, really great thing is that Mark did not hesitate for a minute in saying yes. I believe he understands that every penny, nickel, dime and quarter will go directly to someone suffering from cancer. No administrative costs. This money will stay with our friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers right here in the San Luis Valley.
There are no restrictions for recipients of the Cancer Relief Fund donation. Folks might go out for a special meal. They might pay the cell phone bill. They might buy gas for the unending trips to the doctor. It doesn’t matter what they decide to spend the money on. The money ($200) is theirs to spend as needed. It’s certainly not a lot of money when you are battling cancer, but maybe knowing that so many people donated will make a difference in the feeling of hope.
In the Courier recently it was written that our store (Green Spot) was able to raise $2600 for the SLV CRF. Larry and I could not have done that without the help of our customers. We hosted an open house where over 130 candles were lit and placed around the pond—it was so beautiful! The candles were lit in memory and in honor of many, many people. It was very emotional. Don Richmond (himself a cancer survivor) played and the icicle lights were a sight to behold. It just doesn’t get any better than that. Ever.
When we learned out how much had been raised, all we could think of, was that 13 friends were getting a small gift of love. We have just had two friends pass away from cancer related complications—it is such a brutal disease, and knows no boundaries. If you can help during the month of February, please leave your change at the Safeway counter. We know how difficult it can be to come up with ten or twenty five or fifty dollars for a worthwhile cause, but a lot of people donating a little will certainly add up.
We will also be collecting change at the Green Spot and would invite any other merchant who would like to participate in this month of “Giving from the Heart” campaign to give us a call at 580-7838. Thank you!

P.S. And the hugest thank you ever to Mark Martinez and the Safeway stores! WOW!
