ALAMOSA — Discussions about the future of the Alamosa High School (AHS) gymnastics team continued last week during the Alamosa Board of Education (ABOE) meeting.

The AHS gymnastics team is looking for a place to call home, permanently. Earlier this month, AHS gymnastics coach Delhia Mahaney asked the ABOE to consider converting the 6,700 square foot old agriculture building located on the Ortega Middle School (OMS) campus into a full time training facility.

Right now, the AHS gymnastics team shares space with all the other indoor sports. It is responsible for moving all of the equipment - bars, balance beams, vaults and hundreds of springs - from a storage space located at the top of two flights of stairs in both June and November. During the remaining months of the year, the gymnasts are unable to access their equipment, which is hindering their development and holding them back from reaching their potential.

“It would be a huge asset to our community,” said parent Theresa Curtis during the public comment portion of the meeting. “It is an opportunity for the kids to start... Once you’re exposed, you aren’t going to want to leave.”
