VALLEY – Tu Casa, Inc.’s recent Fundraising Dinner with Erin Merryn raised more than $40,000 for the Children’s Advocacy Center of the San Luis Valley (SLV CAC), Tu Casa’s newest community initiative to ensure child abuse victims are not re-victimized by the response systems designed to protect them.

The SLV CAC Capital Campaign began in 2012 and with the intent of raising more than $840,000 to renovate Tu Casa’s existing building to house the necessary services, train and hire needed staff, and sustain programming long-term. Presently, more than $806,000 has been donated or pledged in support of the initiative, 96 percent of the total campaign goal. Plans to raise the remaining funds including additional private foundation grants and an online donation campaign up until the official Capital Campaign ends on December 31.

The dinner featured nationally renowned speaker, author and GLAMOUR Magazine’s 2012 Woman of the Year, Erin Merryn, who as a child, was sexually abused by a friend’s uncle and soon after by her own cousin, and later went on to become an advocate for child sexual abuse survivors and children through her efforts to pass Erin’s Law in all 50 states. The law aims to increase child sexual abuse prevention efforts in schools, similar to current school programs targeting bullying or drug abuse. Merryn credits her experience with a Children’s Advocacy Center following her abuse with giving her back her voice.
