BLANCA — Sierra Grande welcomed all to celebrate Veterans Day with Costilla County veterans.

In its fourth year, the school’s Veterans Day celebration began in the campus’ courtyard with an opening prayer, the rising of the flag to the sound of bugler Geraldine Garcia’s traditional rendition of Taps and the Pledge of Allegiance.

The celebration continued inside the school’s gym where Larry Kawanabe, a Vietnam veteran who served in the Navy, encouraged students to enter into the armed forces.

“A lot of you young kids don’t know what you want in life,” Kawanabe said. “My recommendation is to choose one of the armed forces.”

He added that today’s society embraces those who fight in the name of America’s freedom, which is much different from times past. When he returned from Vietnam in 1971 after working as an agricultural advisor with Vietnamese navy families, he said he was called a “killer” when he stepped on American soil in San Francisco.

“Now it is completely different,” Kawanabe said. “I am glad to see it.”
