ALAMOSA — One of Colorado’s most enthusiastic supporters of military veterans and active servicemen isn’t even old enough to vote.

She isn’t old enough to enter the military herself, but she plans to when she graduates from high school.

Ayanna Espinola, 14, is an eighth grader at Ortega Middle School in Alamosa.

She is a junior member of the Dickey Springer Unit 113 American Legion Auxiliary and the Honorary Department of Colorado Junior President.

Just like her grandfather Helder Espinola who served during the Vietnam War, Ayanna intends to enter the military in the future.

“I do what I do because of men and women like him. I am proud that he is my grandpa,” she said.

“I want to be a doctor,” she told the Alamosa city council Wednesday night when they presented her with a “You Make a Difference” award for her service to veterans and active military.
