ALAMOSA — Every member of the Alamosa city council on Wednesday wore a special bracelet — because of Isabella Griffin.

Every bracelet affirms Isabella pledge to “Be a Buddy, not a Bully.”

The city council gave Isabella a “You Make a Difference” award, and the audience gave her a standing ovation for her efforts to stop bullying, first in her own school, and beyond.

Isabella told the city council her story. She said she was bullied in third grade, and when she told her parents about it, they told her she needed to stand up for herself or it would get worse, “so that’s what I did.”

The next year she noticed a special needs student being bullied, and she stood up for him as well.

“It made me feel good,” she said.

She then began researching the topic of bullying and discovered that 5 percent of the population are victims, 10 percent are bullies and 85 percent are bystanders.

“I really want to focus on the 85 percent of people who are bystanders and get them involved to step in and stop bullying,” she said.

With the support of her principal, she began the program to “Be a Buddy, not a Bully” in her school. Students who sign up, sign a pledge to “Be a Buddy, not a Bully” and receive a multi-colored bracelet signifying their stand against bullying.
