ALAMOSA — Alamosa has a new mayor, but he is not new to the council or to the city.

Josef Lucero, who has served as councilman and mayor pro tem, last night won the seat being vacated by Mayor Kathy Rogers who chose not to seek re-election. In a three-way race, Lucero beat out fellow Councilman Charlie Griego and challenger David Broyles. Lucero received 788 votes, according to the unofficial results released Tuesday night by the Alamosa County Clerk. Broyles, an Alamosa businessman, received 768 votes, and Griego received 540 votes. Griego will remain on council in his current position representing Ward 3 for the remainder of his term.

Lucero, who had sought the mayoral post before, said on Tuesday night the third time was the charm, and he was still numb with the fact he won but also very excited.

“It’s wonderful. It’s great,” he said.

“I am excited that the people have that kind of faith in me. I hopefully have demonstrated that through the years on council, and I just want to thank all those people out there that voted for me and had faith in me, and the ones that did not I am going to do everything I can to make sure they feel differently after I am in office. Hopefully I will get their trust.”

Lucero added, “I really hope that I can fill the shoes that my predecessors have filled when they have done this job. I hope we can move ahead and do what needs to be done for the citizens in our community.”

Two other three-way races brought new faces to the Alamosa city council, Jan Vigil and Michael Stefano.
