ALAMOSA Kenan Bussen, 21, the Adams State University student charged in connection with a suspected explosive device on campus last weekend, appeared out of custody before Alamosa County Judge Daniel Walzl on Monday afternoon.

In addition to family members, numerous friends of the college student appeared in the courtroom on his behalf, and Joshua Lake appeared as his attorney.

Judge Walzl granted several defense motions, including motions to limit pretrial publicity and preserve and produce evidence, and scheduled a preliminary hearing for 9 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 2. The pretrial hearing will last at least three hours, Deputy District Attorney Mark Loy told the judge. Walzl set aside a period of time on Dec. 2 until 2 p.m. if necessary.

Lake told the judge he had not yet received discovery from the DAs office but expected to.

Bussen, who came to ASU from Clovis, N.M., where he graduated high school in 2011, is charged with felony possession of explosives and menacing in addition to misdemeanor disorderly conduct and reckless endangerment charges. Bussen is an ASU junior studying math education. He participated in the ASU swimming and soccer teams and came to ASU as an accomplished swimmer with several records in New Mexico.

The charges against Bussen stem from an incident last Saturday afternoon, Oct. 26, when ASU campus police were alerted to a suspicious device in the parking lot outside Rex Stadium about the time spectators were leaving the ASU football game. ASU Police Officer David Pino identified the device at the time as a possible chemical explosive.
