LA JARA—For the second straight week, the Centauri Falcons’ defense flexed and showed their brute force and offensive mindset to get three interceptions to shut out the Wray Eagles 28-0 in the opening round of the Class 1A Football Championships.

“It was a very physical game on both sides, they play hard and it was exciting,” said Centauri Head Coach Kyle Forster.

The Falcons, with the win, will have a tough task ahead of them as they will now travel to Burlington High School in Eastern Colorado for a quarterfinal match with the Cougars, who entered as the No. 11 seed. Burlington was able to defeat the No. 6 seeded Hotchkiss Bulldogs 27-7 on Saturday. The Falcons must travel 218 miles to Burlington because they hosted more playoff games than the Bulldogs.

“Burlington is fast, they run a lot of options,” said Forster of Saturday’s contest. “They have two kids who have over 1,000 yards rushing so it’s going to be a challenge for our defense.”

The Falcons found themselves in a defensive struggle early in the game, but as the second quarter rolled around, they were able to find the end zone twice to break the stalemate and go up on top.

The first drive of the game actually had Centauri senior Jason Buhr finding the end zone on an exciting 43-yard run down the home sideline but a holding penalty forced the scoreboard operator to take the points off and the Falcons to punt the ball away. Neither team was able to score in the quarter.
