MONTE VISTA—Emotions ran high in Monte Vista on Saturday with the first game of the Class 1A Playoff game between the Monte Vista Pirates and the Cedaredge Bruins.
“It’s such an emotional game because there is so much at stake. It’s a playoff game and the stakes are always high. Then when a tragedy hits a team, there is really no right way to handle that” said head Monte Vista coach Manny Wasinger. What coach Wasinger was referring to was the tragedy that hit the town of Cedaredge when star running back Reid Gates passed away from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning nearly a month and a half ago.
The 12th seeded Bruins threw everything they had at the home Pirates from the get go, but as the game ended the Pirates would avenge last season’s quarterfinal loss to the Bruins by winning 20-7.
The No. 5 seeded Pirates will travel to the No. 4 seeded Paonia Eagles on Saturday for the quarterfinal round matchup. The Eagles won Saturday’s first round game 34-6 win over Colorado Springs Christian. The game has not yet been set at this time.
