SAN LUIS — Nearly three months since he went missing, Louis Jimmy DeHerrera’s disappearance on August 4 still baffles family members and authorities.

DeHerrera, 47, known in the San Luis community as “Toogie,” was out horn hunting with his nephew Jeremiah Benton on the Cielo Vista Ranch outside of San Luis on August 4 the last time anyone saw him locally.

The two had gone in different directions but were supposed to meet back at their truck. Jeremiah returned to the truck. His uncle did not.

Jeremiah waited for about an hour and honked the horn to see if he could get his uncle’s attention. Not being able to find his uncle on his own, he sought help.

The Costilla County Sheriff’s Office became involved on August 5, according to Undersheriff Andrew Espinoza, spokesman for the office. Patrol Sgt. Ricky Rodriguez headed up the investigation that turned into an intensive four-day manhunt incorporating helicopter flights, ATV’s, horseback searches, National Guard assistance and up to 40 people searching the area where DeHerrera was last seen.
