SAN LUIS VALLEY—Besides battling for glory and a trophy, the five volleyball teams that will be in action on Friday and Saturday in regional tournaments will put everything they have on the court in an attempt to seal a state berth for the 2013 State Volleyball Championships next Friday and Saturday at the Denver Coliseum.

In Class 3A, the Valley has the Alamosa Mean Moose as the solo qualifier as they will travel up to the Fort Collins area to participate in the Region 2 Tournament. Alamosa, who holds a 7-16 overall record, enters the state tournament as the No. 35 seed. They will have games against the No. 2 seeded Valley Vikings, who are 18-5 on the season, and the No. 23 seeded La Junta Tigers, who are 13-8 on the season.

Alamosa High School Head Coach Amber Ullery, who is in her first year at the helm of the Moose, believes that this will be a good learning experience for her young team that only has three seniors.

“It’s a good opportunity for the team,” she said. “We are better than our record shows, we can match up well with Valley size-wise, but they do have the state experience.” The Vikings entered 2013 as the defending state champions as they had a strong 29-0 record in 2012.

“It will be a learning lesson for this team that is young,” said Ullery. “When a team gets a new coaching staff, it’s difficult to learn a new coaches’ philosophy and coaching techniques but they are all good kids and they have grown as individuals and as a team.”
