SILVER CITY, N.M.—Adams State University cross country fans had several things to celebrate on Saturday as the Grizzlies competed in the 2013 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, which were hosted by Western New Mexico University.

After the women’s race, fans were ecstatic as the women took the team crown by scoring 37 points. To add even more icing on the cake, the Grizzlies had the individual champion in Alamosa native Lauren Martin, who finished the 6,000-meter course at the Silver City Golf Course in 21 minutes, 20.4 seconds. Because of her victory, the junior was named as the 2013 RMAC Women’s Runner of the Year while the team victory gave her father, Head Coach Damon Martin, the distinction of the 2013 RMAC Women’s Coach of the Year.

Western State Colorado finished in second place in the team standings with 45 points while Metro State was a distant third with 105 points.

Lauren Martin had a 12-second gap on the second place finisher, Metro State sophomore Janelle Lincks, who finished in 21:32.9.

Creede native and ASU senior Kelley Lamb took third place by crossing the line in 21:34.6. The first freshman to cross the line was ASU’s Maura O’Brien, who finished fifth with a time of 21:52.9. Because of her effort, O’Brien earned the 2013 RMAC Women’s Freshman of the Year honors.
