ALAMOSA— The Adams State University football scored 21 unanswered points to take a 21-3 lead early to win Saturday’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game against Western New Mexico University 41-20, inside Rex Stadium.

WNMU, who is 2-5 overall and 2-4 in RMAC action, opened the game with a lengthy drive after forcing an ASU three-and-out. The Grizzlies are 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the RMAC.

The first score of the game came on as WNMU’s Josh McIntire hit a 27-yard field goal for a 3-0 WNMU lead at the 10:57 mark.

The teams traded possessions for the rest of the first quarter and then the Grizzlies went to work on offense in the second quarter. They would move the ball 83 yards on nine plays to score a 16-yard rushing touchdown from quarterback Justin Juda to take a 7-3 lead two minutes into the second quarter.

The Grizzlies looked like they were going to give the Mustangs good field position as they were faced with a third down and six yards to go on the 5-yard line. But that is when quarterback Austin Hillman was able to scramble and break loose for a 95-yard run. He broke toward the far side of the field before cutting back in to evade some tackler and race down the middle of the field to score six.

Less than four minutes later Hillman was responsible for another huge play, this time through the air as he found Chris Jamison for a 60-yard touchdown pass to cap off a 3-play drive that only lasted 37 seconds.
