High speed chase ends in fatal crash

Modified: Friday, Oct 25th, 2013

ALAMOSA — CORRECTION: The only crash victim in the Tuesday night fatal south of Alamosa on Hwy 285 was Dennin Vandeleur, a 24 year old male. The Courier’s initial article in Thursday’s paper incorrectly stated that two people died in the Oct. 23 crash. Vandeleur was the only occupant in his vehicle and the only fatality.

According to Alamosa County Coroner Kevin Rogers, the cause and manner of death and toxicology are still pending autopsy results.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on October 22, an officer of the Alamosa Police Department observed a vehicle at the intersection of Main Street and West Avenue traveling through a red signal light at a high rate of speed.

In response to the erratic driving, the officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop, according to the Alamosa Police Department. Instead of pulling over, the vehicle’s driver increased its speed and pursuit ensued southbound on Colorado Highway 285 where the fleeing vehicle ultimately crashed into another vehicle near milepost 28.

The pursuit lasted approximately 3-4 minutes, according to the police department, and the driver and only occupant of the fleeing vehicle died at the scene. No other citizens were injured as a result of the accident, and a minor injury was sustained to one of the officers involved.
