ALAMOSA — A new bar proposed for State Avenue brought mixed response during a public hearing before the Alamosa city council Wednesday night.

Tim Rivera, who owns the 513 State Avenue business, has applied for a new tavern license under the name Railroad Lounge. Rivera was formerly involved in the Downtown Cantina at that address and had most recently leased the site to the owners of Spuddy’s whose license was recently pulled by the city due to liquor license infractions and incidents resulting in police involvement at that location.

Before the Rivera family owned the property, the 513 State Avenue business was the long-time site of Greco’s, owned by the Griego family.

The council took public comment on Rivera’s proposed license application Wednesday night and will make a decision on the license during the council’s next regular meeting on November 6.

Rivera told the city council he wanted to provide a place that tourists traveling on the train would like to come to. That was his purpose in naming the new establishment the Railroad Lounge, he explained.

He also planned to offer a light menu to help attract railroad customers, he said.

Accompanied by Pagosa Springs Attorney Duane Montano, Rivera told the council he had never had any liquor license violations during the five years he was involved with the Cantina or the 18 years he was involved with Mrs. Rivera’s Kitchen on Sixth Street.

“I would like to bring back my customer base I had before, which were local people around the community, also some college people,” Rivera said. “I would like to bring in the train people.”
