Monte Vista honors U.S. soldiers

The Color Guard raises the U.S. flag at the newly dedicated flagpole at the First Christian Church in Monte Vista.

MONTE VISTA On Sunday, Monte Vista erected permanent memorials to two of its soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq.

The First Christian Church at 200 Washington Street dedicated its flag and flagpole in memory of Sgt. Faith Hinkley, U. S. Army and Sgt. Glen Martinez, United States Marine Corp. Sgt. Martinez died on May 2, 2008 in Iraq, and Sgt. Hinkley died on Aug. 7, 2010 in Iraq.

Members of their families were on hand for the dedication of a plaque, flagpole and flag on Sunday.

Also on hand for the September 15th ceremony were Command Sgt. Major Larry Heersink of the U.S. Army, Captain Eugene Farish of the U.S. Army Rangers and Corporal Matthew Martinez of the U. S. Marine Corps presenting the colors and raising the flag.
