SAGUACHE COUNTY — A fiery crash claimed the life of a Crestone woman yesterday afternoon south of Moffat.

Safiya Balekian, 63, of Crestone died as a result of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash five miles south of Moffat in Saguache County about 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Balekian was driving a 2004 Subaru south on Colorado 17 when she lost control of the vehicle and crossed into the northbound lane where her vehicle collided with a 2011 Toyota FJ Landcrusier driven by Steven Barry, 54, of San Diego, Calif. After the crash, the Subaru went off the road and became engulfed in flames, the State Patrol reported.

The Toyota came to rest in the northbound lane.

Barry and a female passenger, Sherry Rice, 51, also of San Diego, were transported to San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center. Barry was later flown to St. Anthony’s in Denver with serious injuries. Rice was admitted to San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, according to the State Patrol.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
